"They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger, and then it was over."
The first line of the first game. This series was based on story first and foremost. Cut scenes were graphic novels, the noir theme like Tim Burton's 1989 Batman. It was dark and gritty and took place in New York. The game was the catalyst for a terrific story about a cop who had lost everything searching for answers why. Max Payne was a DEA Agent working undercover, then a criminal on the run. It was personal his wife and child dead and no answers why, just a green trail of drugs.
Max Payne was one of the most brilliantly written games by Sam Lake and if it were a book, would have some of the best imagery I have heard. "The sun went down with practiced bravado, twilight crawled across the sky, laden with foreboding."
And now it's taking place in Sao Paulo he actually gets to see the sun, he traded in his collared shirt, trench coat and slicked back hair for a beard shaved head and a muscle shirt... What is he fighting for? He avenged the death of his wife and child, stopped all production of Valkyr, and took out his newest enemy Vlad (which I thought was a big mistake and had no continuity with Max Payne 1) Mona Sax is dead and no one is hunting him. How could this possibly "Not be over"?
This is nothing like the Max Payne of the past, this is another half-assed game made to appeal to the new generation of player following the "Why make a great game that might not sell as well, when you can make a s**t game that will fly off the shelves"
Who knows though right? Maybe I'm full of s**t and this is going to be the game that bring us out of the dark ages of gaming, it's written by the same guy (who also wrote Alan Wake) so perhaps it will please everyone and I'll have to eat my own words when I tell everyone how amazing Max Payne 3 is.
